McIlroy will Return to Defend Shanghai Masters

The organizers of the Shanghai Masters golf tournament have confirmed in a statement that world number one and two time Major winner Rory McIlroy will return to the event to defend his title later in the year. The $ 7 million event was added to the schedule of the European Tour this year after the exploits of McIlroy last year, when he won the title from a field that consisted of 21 players.

And this year’s edition of the event will be the richest event in the history of the European Tour and will be held between the 25th and 28th of October. The stage will be the same as last year at the Lake Malaren Golf Club in shanghai, China. And the organizers are already excited after getting the confirmation that the world number one Rory McIlroy will indeed be returning to defend his title.

Last year thousands of fans tuned in to the official Shanghai website to watch live sport online, and more are expected this year, especially now that McIlroy is world number one.

McIlroy regained his status as the best player in the world after he won the PGA Championship last weekend with a margin of 8 strokes, winning his second Major title at the age of 23 years. The win also returned him back to the top spot in golf’s rankings, a position he had surrendered to Luke Donald back in May.

And speaking about his participation at the Shanghai Masters, McIlroy stated that he is extremely excited at being able to return to Shanghai. He added that the event couldn’t come sooner and admitted that he is looking forward to teeing off there as a defending Major winner. The latest golf betting makes him the slim favourite ahead of Luke Donald.

The field will consist of as many as 78 players this year and it is being believed that most of the players will be drawn from the top 100 of golf’s rankings. However, the big draw for the tournament will indeed be the world number one Rory McIlroy.
